By granting the Amish special privileges on the basis of a falsified depiction of innocence and two-dimensionality, the US government mocks those aspects that are genuinely beautiful about Amish culture.
The Taliban in Afghanistan and the Amish Church in America are unified in the fight against women’s rights. E.g., the Wisconsin v. Yoder verdict is eerily similar to the Taliban mandate of no schooling for females.
It’s more common than not for Amish children, especially the oldest girl and boy, to be forced to be the second mother and second father. This is parentification, a form of child abuse.
A central message of the film is that wanting rights for practicing Amish women and girls is an attack on the faith, but taking away their rights is just religious freedom.
“Secular” has nothing to do with religion. You can be religious and secular at the same time.
